🪡 Pattern Instructions
Gauge Note: Achieving the correct gauge is crucial for the finished dimensions of this garment. Please make a swatch and adjust your hook size if necessary. This hoodie is designed with 4-6 inches (10-15 cm) of positive ease for a comfortable, oversized fit.
Foundation
Back Panel (make 1): Ch 63. Row 1 (RS): Hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (62 hdc) Rows 2-49: Ch 1, hdc in each st across. Turn. (62 hdc) The back panel should measure approximately 24.8 inches (63 cm) wide x 28 inches (71 cm) long. Do not fo. Continue to join shoulders.
Front Panels (make 2): Left Front Panel: Ch 33. Row 1 (RS): Hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (32 hdc) Rows 2-49: Ch 1, hdc in each st across. Turn. (32 hdc) Fo, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Right Front Panel: Ch 33. Row 1 (RS): Hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (32 hdc) Rows 2-49: Ch 1, hdc in each st across. Turn. (32 hdc) Do not fo. Continue to join shoulders.
Body Assembly
Join Shoulders: With RS facing, place the Right Front Panel on top of the Back Panel, aligning the shoulder edges. Row 50 (Joining - Right Shoulder): Ch 1, hdc in the first 12 sts of the Right Front Panel and the first 12 sts of the Back Panel simultaneously (working through both layers). Turn. (12 hdc) Fo. With RS facing, place the Left Front Panel on top of the Back Panel, aligning the shoulder edges. Join yarn with a sl st in the 1st st of the Back Panel from the opposite side of the right shoulder join (skipping the 38 unworked sts in the center for the neckline). Row 50 (Joining - Left Shoulder): Ch 1, hdc in the first 12 sts of the Left Front Panel and the next 12 sts of the Back Panel simultaneously (working through both layers). Turn. (12 hdc) Fo, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Shoulder seams are now approximately 4.8 inches (12 cm) each, with a 15.2-inch (38 cm) neckline opening.
Side Seams: With RS together, align the side edges of the front and back panels. Using your yarn needle and a long yarn tail, seam the sides from the bottom edge up, leaving an opening of approximately 8 inches (20 cm) at the top for the armholes. Repeat for the other side.
Sleeves (make 2)
Ribbed Cuff: Ch 11. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (10 sc) Rows 2-30: Ch 1, sc in BLO of each st across. Turn. (10 sc) Do not fo. Fold the cuff in half, aligning Row 1 with Row 30. Sl st through both layers to form a tube. Turn cuff RS out.
Sleeve Body: Rotate the cuff to work along the long edge. Round 1: Ch 1, make 30 hdc evenly around the cuff edge. Join with sl st to first hdc. (30 hdc) Rounds 2-35: Ch 1, hdc in each st around. Join with sl st to first hdc. (30 hdc) For a wider upper arm, increase by 2 hdc every 5 rounds, placing increases at beginning and end of the round, until desired width is reached, then continue straight. However, 30 hdc is generally sufficient for XL. Fo, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Attach Sleeves: With the hoodie body RS out, align the center top of the sleeve with the shoulder seam. Use stitch markers to evenly distribute the sleeve around the armhole opening. Using a yarn needle and sleeve tail, sew the sleeve to the armhole opening. Repeat for the second sleeve.
Kangaroo Pocket
Pocket Flap (Bottom): Ch 45. Row 1 (RS): Hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (44 hdc) Rows 2-10: Ch 1, hdc in each st across. Turn. (44 hdc) Fo, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Pocket Base (Top): Ch 45. Row 1 (RS): Hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (44 hdc) Rows 2-15: Ch 1, hdc in each st across. Turn. (44 hdc) Fo, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Assemble Pocket: Lay the Back Panel flat with RS facing up. Place the Pocket Flap on the lower front of the hoodie, approximately 4 inches (10 cm) up from the bottom edge and centered horizontally. Sew the bottom edge of the Pocket Flap to the hoodie. Place the Pocket Base on top of the Pocket Flap, aligning the bottom edges. Sew the side edges of both layers of the pocket to the hoodie. The top edge of the Pocket Base remains open.
Hood
Outer Hood: Ch 81. Row 1: Hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (80 hdc) Rows 2-25: Ch 1, hdc in each st across. Turn. (80 hdc) Do not fo.
Shape Hood Top: Fold the hood piece in half lengthwise (Row 1 aligned with Row 25). Sl st through both layers of the last row to create the top seam of the hood. Fo, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Attach Hood: With RS facing, align the center of the hood's back seam with the center back of the hoodie's neckline. Using stitch markers, evenly distribute the hood around the neckline opening. Sew the hood to the neckline.
Finishing
Bottom Ribbing: Join yarn with a sl st to the bottom edge of the hoodie at the back seam. Round 1: Ch 1, hdc evenly around the entire bottom edge of the hoodie, aiming for approximately 110 hdc. Join with sl st to first hdc. (approx. 110 hdc) Rounds 2-5: Ch 1, BLO hdc in each st around. Join with sl st to first hdc. (approx. 110 hdc) Fo.
Cuffs Ribbing (if desired): If you prefer a tighter cuff than the ribbed cuff already created, you can add an additional round of BLO hdc to the existing cuff or create a new separate cuff. For an additional round: Join yarn to cuff, Ch 1, BLO hdc in each st around, sl st to join. Repeat for desired width.
Drawstring (Optional): Ch 200 (or desired length). Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Fo. Weave through the front edge of the hood using a yarn needle.
Weaving in Ends: Weave in all remaining yarn tails securely using your yarn needle. This is especially important for variegated yarn to prevent tails from showing.
💡 Pro Tips
- Consistent Tension is Key for Variegated Yarn: Variegated yarns can be unforgiving with inconsistent tension, as it can disrupt the color transitions and make stitches appear uneven. Pay extra attention to maintaining an even tension throughout your work, especially in large, flat sections like the body panels.
- Strategic Seaming: When seaming the panels and attaching the sleeves, use the mattress stitch or a slip stitch seam from the wrong side for a clean, almost invisible finish. This is particularly important for an oversized garment where seams might be more visible due to the drape.
- Blocking for Best Drape and Size: Even though it's a wool/acrylic blend, a gentle wet block can significantly improve the drape and evenness of your stitches. For wool/acrylic, gently wet the garment, roll in a towel to remove excess water, then lay flat to dry, shaping it to the correct dimensions. Avoid stretching acrylic components too much when wet, as it doesn't have the memory of pure wool.
